T Level Healthcare Science vs Science A Levels: A Guide for Parents, Carers, and Students
Studying a T Level is different to the traditional A Level. Here we outline the main differences to help you have discussions and make decisions.

Both T Levels and A Levels are qualifications designed for students aged 16–19 who have completed their GCSEs. While both can lead to university, apprenticeships, or employment, they differ in focus and structure.
Key Differences
- T Levels:
Practical and vocational, T Levels prepare students for work in a specific sector or industry. A key feature is that students spend 20% of their time (around 45 days) working with an employer. - A Levels:
Academic and theoretical, A Levels focus on subject knowledge and critical thinking. They do not include work experience and are not designed to prepare students for a specific job or career.
Entry Requirements
- A Levels:
Students need five GCSEs at grade 4 or above to enter A Level courses. For subjects like maths and sciences, this requirement often increases to grades 6 or 7. - T Levels:
Entry requirements vary depending on the school or college offering them. Students who haven’t achieved grade 4 in GCSE maths and English will need to work towards these qualifications alongside their T Level.
If students aren’t ready to start a T Level after completing their GCSEs, the 1-year T Level Foundation Year provides additional support to help them prepare.
Course Structure and Content
A Levels
- Focus: Science A Levels are more theoretical and academic, with most learning taking place in the classroom. They focus on subject knowledge rather than providing a direct route into a specific job or career.
- Assessment: Grades are usually determined by exams at the end of the course, with some coursework depending on the subject. Students receive one grade per subject.
T Level Healthcare Science
- Focus: Combines classroom learning with practical experience. Students study core science content while specialising in healthcare science topics such as:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Person-centred care
- Industry Placement: Students spend 20% of their time (around 45 days) with an employer, gaining hands-on experience to develop the skills and knowledge companies value.
- Employer-Set Project: Students complete a substantial task set by their employer, applying their core knowledge and skills to solve real-world challenges.
- Additional Skills Development: T Level students also improve their English, maths, and digital skills as part of the course. If they haven’t already achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English and maths (or level 2 functional skills), they’ll need to work towards these qualifications.
At the end of the course, T Level students receive an overall grade for the entire qualification, based on multiple elements.
Destinations After Completion
Both qualifications provide access to university, apprenticeships, further education, or employment:
- A Levels: Widely accepted by all UK universities as well as higher-level apprenticeships and employers.
- T Levels: Worth UCAS points – a Distinction* is equivalent to three A Levels at A*. They provide access to over 140 UK universities (including 17 Russell Group institutions), higher-level apprenticeships, further education courses, or direct employment.
